Permits for Treks and Expeditions in Nepal.
Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card
The TIMS Card is mandatory for all foreign trekkers in Nepal. It helps authorities monitor trekking routes and ensure trekkers’ safety. According to Nepal Government regulations effective from April 2023, solo trekking without a licensed trekking guide is not allowed. TIMS cards must be obtained through a registered trekking agency, which is arranged for you by Travel With Ngawang.
National Park and Conservation Area Permits
National Park and Conservation Area permits are required for trekking in protected regions such as Everest (Sagarmatha), Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu. These permit fees support conservation efforts, wildlife protection, and local community development. Trekkers must carry these permits at all times during the trek.
Restricted Area Permits (RAP)
Restricted Area Permits are required for trekking in remote and border regions such as Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, and Manaslu. These areas require a licensed guide and, in most cases, a minimum group size as set by the government. Permit costs vary depending on the region and duration of the trek.
Expedition and Peak Climbing Permits
Any peak climbing or mountaineering activity in Nepal requires an official climbing permit. Peaks above 7,000 meters are regulated by the Department of Tourism, while peaks below 7,000 meters fall under the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Permit fees depend on the mountain, altitude, and climbing season.
Garbage Deposit and Environmental Regulations
All climbing expeditions must submit a refundable garbage deposit to ensure responsible waste management. For Mount Everest expeditions, climbers are required to bring down a minimum of 8 kg of solid waste per person, following Nepal’s strict environmental protection rules.
How Permits Are Arranged
Travel With Ngawang assists in coordinating all required permits through authorized trekking agencies. Required documents include a valid passport, two passport-size photographs, a Nepal tourist visa, and a confirmed trekking itinerary. All permits must be carried during the entire trek.
