Overview
The Mustang Tiji Festival takes place annually in Lo Manthang, Mustang District, and is a three-day celebration known as “The Chasing of the Evil Spirits.” Central to the festival is the legendary story of Dorje Jongboo, a god who must battle his evil spirit father to save the Kingdom of Lo Manthang from destruction. According to legend, the demon father caused great suffering by blocking water sources—an extremely precious resource in this arid region—leading to famine and misfortune.
Originally, the festival was known locally as the Tensi Ceremony, a religious Puja observed throughout the Mustang Valley. Over time, it became popularly known as the Tiji Festival, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and offering a rare glimpse into the spiritual and cultural traditions of Mustang. Visitors can witness colorful rituals, traditional dances, and the unique customs that have been preserved for centuries.
